Junior Harambee Starlets depart for Spain ahead of World Cup
Despite their significant contributions during the World Cup qualifiers, the coaching staff prioritized a balance of fitness, form, and tactical alignment to ensure the team’s readiness
Kenya’s Harambee Starlets, the Junior National Women’s Soccer Team, have departed for a pre-World Cup training camp in Spain. Their participation in the Junior World Cup event in the Dominican Republic this October will mark Kenya’s historic debut in a FIFA World Cup tournament, a proud moment for both the team and the nation.
However, 12 players, including Claire Meris and Mitshelle Waithera, did not make the final roster. In a statement released by Football Kenya Federation (FKF) on Thursday, FKF explained, “Despite their significant contributions during the World Cup qualifiers, the coaching staff prioritized a balance of fitness, form, and tactical alignment to ensure the team’s readiness for the challenges ahead.”
Sheryl Amuok is another notable absence, having sustained a knee injury during the East Africa School Games. Although these players won’t be part of the final squad, their dedication remains crucial, having played an integral role in the team’s journey to this point.
During their time in Spain, the Junior Starlets will participate in friendly matches designed to sharpen their skills and tactics ahead of their debut on the global stage.
The 2024 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup will take place from October 16 to November 3, 2024. The Junior Starlets will kick off their group stage matches on October 18 against England. They will face Korea DPR on October 20, and complete their group fixtures on October 24 against Mexico.
