President William Ruto has appointed Nelson Marwa as the new Chairperson of the Nairobi Rivers Commission, replacing Bishop Margaret Wanjiru.

The changes were announced in Gazette Notice No. 16248 dated October 16, 2026, with Marwa’s appointment taking effect immediately for a three-year term.

The notice, issued under the President’s constitutional powers, formally revoked Wanjiru’s appointment to the position.

Wanjiru had previously indicated her intention to leave the commission. In August, the former Starehe MP wrote to Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, giving a 30-day resignation notice and expressing her readiness to pursue other engagements.

She described her 20-month tenure at the commission as an important learning experience and thanked Koskei for the opportunity to serve. She indicated that she would leave office on August 31.

Following Marwa’s appointment, Nairobi Rivers Commission Chief Executive Officer Brigadier (Rtd) Joseph Muracia welcomed him to the institution, citing his experience in public administration, government coordination and security management.

Muracia said the appointment comes at a crucial stage in the implementation of the Nairobi Rivers Basin Regeneration Programme, which seeks to rehabilitate the city’s rivers, safeguard riparian reserves and improve the urban environment.

He expressed confidence that the commission would continue advancing its mandate under Marwa’s leadership, with a focus on creating a cleaner, greener and more resilient Nairobi.

Marwa’s appointment comes as the commission continues coordinating initiatives aimed at restoring Nairobi’s river systems and improving environmental conservation across the basin.
