Qatar’s Father Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani Dies at 74
Qatar is mourning the passing of its Father Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who died at the age of 74, according to an announcement by the country’s Amiri Diwan on Sunday.
In an official statement, the Amiri Diwan expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the former ruler, saying the nation mourns “His Highness the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani,” who passed away on Sunday morning.
Sheikh Hamad served as the Emir of Qatar from 1995 to 2013, a period widely regarded as transformative in the country’s history. During his leadership, Qatar experienced rapid economic growth, social progress and increased global influence, largely driven by its vast natural gas resources.
Under his rule, Qatar emerged as the world’s leading exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG), attracting significant foreign investment and forging strong international partnerships. His vision helped transform the Gulf nation into a major player on the global stage.
Sheikh Hamad also played a key role in strengthening Qatar’s political and diplomatic presence across the Middle East, North Africa and beyond. One of the defining achievements associated with his era was the launch of Al Jazeera in 1996, which went on to become one of the world’s most influential international news networks.
Domestically, his leadership ushered in important political reforms, including the adoption of Qatar’s first permanent constitution in 2004 and the introduction of municipal elections, allowing women to vote and contest for public office.
The former ruler, credited with transforming Qatar into a global energy and diplomatic powerhouse, passed away on Sunday at the age of 74.
Although he stepped down in 2013, handing power to his son, Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in a rare voluntary transfer of power by a Gulf monarch, Sheikh Hamad remained a respected national figure. His appearance at the opening ceremony of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar was met with a standing ovation from fans around the world.
Following news of his death, leaders from across the globe sent messages of condolence, paying tribute to Sheikh Hamad’s leadership and his lasting contribution to Qatar’s remarkable transformation into a modern and influential nation.
