Kenya has confirmed four additional Ebola infections, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to seven, including the first patient who succumbed to the disease.

In a statement issued on Saturday, October 17, the Ministry of Health said all four newly confirmed patients had developed fever before testing positive for the virus.

Those infected include a male relative of the deceased patient and three healthcare workers who provided medical care to him during his hospitalisation.

According to the Ministry, the relative had been under quarantine since October 6, while the three healthcare workers — two men and one woman aged 29, 35 and 32 — were isolated on October 9.

The healthcare workers had attended to the initial patient between October 3 and 4 before being placed under quarantine as authorities intensified measures to contain the outbreak.

Director General for Health Dr Patrick Amoth confirmed that laboratory tests conducted at both the National Virology Reference Laboratory and the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) returned positive results for all four patients.

The patients are currently receiving supportive treatment at designated healthcare facilities.

Kenya’s Ebola confirmation process involves testing samples at both laboratories to verify positive results before cases are officially confirmed.

Health officials say the early identification of the infections was facilitated by the quarantine measures already in place. This helped authorities detect the cases before further spread could occur among family members and the wider community.

The Ministry has sought to reassure the public that the risk of infection among the general population remains low, noting that there is currently no evidence of community transmission.

“The Ministry wishes to reassure Kenyans that the risk to the general public remains low as there is no evidence of community transmission of the disease,” Dr Amoth said.

Health authorities continue to monitor individuals who may have been exposed to the virus as efforts to contain the outbreak continue.
