Tribunal Lifts Suspension on Ukombozi Alliance Registration
The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) has lifted orders that had temporarily halted the registration of The Ukombozi Alliance (TUA), allowing the Registrar of Political Parties to proceed with the process ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In a statement issued on Thursday, October 29, 2026, Wiper Democratic Movement-Kenya leader Kalonzo Musyoka confirmed that the tribunal had discharged its earlier orders suspending the alliance’s registration.
“The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT), sitting today, Thursday, October 29, 2026, has discharged its earlier orders suspending the registration process of The Ukombozi Alliance (TUA),” the statement read.
The decision followed proceedings in case number PPDT/E007/2026, involving petitioner Allan Jayuga Akivaga, the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties and Wiper Democratic Movement-Kenya.
Following the ruling, the Registrar is free to continue and conclude the registration process in accordance with the Political Parties Act and other applicable laws.
However, the lifting of the suspension does not in itself confirm that the alliance has been fully registered.
Dispute Over Ukombozi Name
The tribunal had on October 13, 2026, issued interim orders barring the Registrar from approving, registering or gazetting the proposed name pending the determination of a challenge over its reservation.
The dispute arose after Akivaga challenged the proposed adoption of the name, citing concerns over competing claims involving the Ukombozi political identity.
The disagreement placed the planned rebranding of the Azimio la Umoja–One Kenya Coalition on hold as the parties awaited further directions from the tribunal.
In a letter dated September 8, the Registrar indicated that the proposed name had not been approved or authorised and noted that another applicant had reserved the name The Ukombozi Alliance on July 20, 2026.
The dispute has also drawn attention to the political activities of the Linda Mwananchi faction, which had been associated with The Equitable Party (TEP) and efforts to secure a political identity incorporating the name Ukombozi.
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has been linked to the faction’s political plans as opposition figures position themselves ahead of the next general election.

Ukombozi Alliance Rebranding
The Ukombozi Alliance is the proposed new identity of the Azimio la Umoja–One Kenya Coalition as opposition leaders reorganise their political arrangements ahead of the 2027 polls.
Kalonzo has maintained that the alliance seeks to accommodate additional political parties and broaden cooperation among opposition formations.
The tribunal’s latest decision removes the immediate legal restriction that had stalled the registration process, allowing the Registrar to proceed subject to the applicable legal requirements.
The development comes amid ongoing political realignments and negotiations over coalition leadership, party identities and the selection of candidates ahead of the 2027 General Election.
