NAIROBI, Kenya — An 18-storey building under construction has collapsed along 9th Street in Eastleigh, Nairobi, triggering an emergency response as fears grow that several people may be trapped beneath the rubble.

The incident occurred on Friday afternoon, October 23, 2026, in the busy commercial neighbourhood, bringing business activities to a standstill as residents, traders and passers-by gathered near the scene.

The Kenya Red Cross confirmed that the collapse occurred at approximately 1:40 p.m. and said its Nairobi response team had been dispatched to support emergency operations.

According to preliminary reports, the building came down suddenly, sending debris and thick clouds of dust across the surrounding streets.

Several people are feared to have been caught beneath the collapsed structure. However, the number of people trapped, injured or killed had not been officially confirmed at the time of publication.

Police officers and emergency responders moved to the scene as authorities worked to secure the area and facilitate rescue efforts. Nairobi County also deployed machinery to assist in clearing the debris and searching for possible survivors.

The incident has raised fresh concerns over construction safety and the enforcement of building regulations in Nairobi, where several structural collapses have been reported in recent months.

The cause of the Eastleigh collapse remains unknown, and further details are expected as rescue operations continue.
