Winnie Odinga Declares Bid for Nairobi Senate Seat in 2027
BONDO, SIAYA COUNTY — East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member of Parliament Winnie Odinga has declared her intention to contest the Nairobi County Senate seat in the 2027 General Election.
Winnie made the announcement on Thursday, October 15, 2026, during the first anniversary commemoration of her late father, former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, at Migwena Cultural and Sports Grounds in Bondo, Siaya County.
Addressing the gathering, Winnie said her decision to enter the race was informed partly by the political developments surrounding incumbent Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who has expressed ambitions for higher office.
“Let it not be a rumour. As Edwin Sifuna searches for higher offices, I see kuna nafasi hapo Nairobi. And that is why I have decided that I will stand for the Senator of Nairobi County,” she said.
Winnie also called on young Kenyans to actively participate in politics, urging them to seek elective positions at different levels, including governor, senator, Member of Parliament and Member of County Assembly.
She emphasised that she would not pursue her political ambitions alone, saying she intended to move alongside young people seeking leadership opportunities.
The declaration places Winnie among the politicians positioning themselves for the Nairobi Senate contest ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The incumbent, Edwin Sifuna, won the Nairobi senatorial seat on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket in the 2022 General Election.
Winnie’s announcement comes as the Odinga family and political allies commemorate one year since Raila’s death, renewing public discussions about his political legacy and the future of his movement.
During her address, Winnie also reflected on the challenges facing ordinary Kenyans, calling for a country where people have equal opportunities to build decent lives regardless of their background or surname.
Her entry into the race now sets the stage for further political debate over the Nairobi Senate seat as aspirants prepare for the 2027 polls.
