Yvonne Okwara Quits Citizen TV After 20 Years in Journalism
Veteran Kenyan journalist Yvonne Okwara has signed off from Citizen TV, bringing an end to her eight-and-a-half-year tenure at the Royal Media Services-owned station and marking a major transition in her nearly two-decade career in journalism.
Okwara announced her departure during her final appearance on The Explainer on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, where she reflected on her professional journey, thanked colleagues and mentors, and hinted at plans to pursue a new chapter.
In her farewell message, the celebrated broadcaster said she was leaving with the same optimism and passion for journalism and Kenya that she had when she entered the profession.
“After 20 years of building this ship, it is time to build another,” she said, signalling that her departure was not the end of her professional ambitions.
Okwara also urged Kenyans to continue demanding accountability from leaders and asking difficult questions on matters affecting the country.
“Keep asking the right questions. Keep demanding better. Keep holding power to account. Keep believing that this country is worth fighting for,” she told viewers.

Career at Citizen TV
Okwara joined Citizen TV in May 2018 after working at KTN News, where she gained recognition for her political interviews and current affairs reporting.
During her time at Citizen TV, she became one of the station’s prominent news anchors, presenting prime-time bulletins and participating in major national conversations through programmes including The Explainer and News Gang.
She used her farewell broadcast to appreciate the colleagues and mentors who contributed to her growth, as well as viewers who supported her throughout her career.
Her journalism journey included work at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), Nation Media Group and KTN News, where she developed experience in radio, television, business reporting and political analysis.
Okwara did not disclose details of her next professional assignment during her farewell broadcast. Her exit marks the end of a significant chapter in Kenyan television journalism, as audiences await her next move.
