Japan’s former prime minister Shinzo Abe dies in hospital after he was shot at campaign event
Japan is reeling from the attempted assassination of its longest-serving former prime minister, Shinzo Abe.
Mr Abe was shot at twice while he was giving a speech in the southern city of Nara on Friday morning.
Security officials at the scene tackled the gunman, and the 41-year-old suspect is now in police custody.
The alleged assailant, was arrested at the scene. There is no known motive at this time, but there are reports the suspect is a former member of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Forces.
