Former President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud re-elected as president of Somalia
Former Somali leader Hassan Sheikh Mohamud won the presidency again in voting by parliamentarians on Sunday in an airport hangar protected by blast walls from Islamist insurgents whom he must now fight for a second time.
Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has been chosen as Somalia’s new president, five years after being voted out of the presidency.
Analysts had predicted that incumbent President Mohamed – who also is known as Farmaajo because of his appetite for Italian cheese – would face an uphill battle to be re-elected. No sitting president has ever won re-election in Somalia, where rival clans battle intensely for political power.
Born in the Hiran region of central Somalia, Mohamud has a master’s degree in technical education from India’s Barkatullah University. He co-founded the SIMAD university in Mogadishu.
