Former Chief Justice and Presidential hopeful David Maraga has cautioned the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission regarding the credibility of the 2027 general elections, emphasizing the continuous need for public trust.

He has demanded an immediate audit and inspection of Kenya’s voter register, citing confusion stemming from recent statements by the IEBC.

“Elections are a process whose trust and integrity must be exercised at all times, not just on Election Day,” Maraga said.

He revealed that during a meeting with the Commission on March 23, he had already raised concerns about safeguarding the integrity of the electoral system.

“When I met with the Commission on March 23, I emphasised the need for uncompromising ballot integrity and the faithful upholding of their Oath of Office,” he stated.

Maraga further called for the urgent convening of a broad-based stakeholders’ forum to address key electoral issues, including the audit and inspection of the voter register, diaspora voter registration, election technology, and necessary legal reforms.

His statement comes after the IEBC clarified that only voters who registered before 2012 and were not captured in the biometric register need to register afresh. The commission explained that Kenyans enrolled in the biometric system introduced after the 2010 Constitution and the 2012 boundaries delimitation do not need to re-register.
