Major Boost for Rice Farmers as Governor Mwadime’s Flagship Taveta Rice Mill Nears Launch
Rice farmers in Taveta are set to benefit from a major agricultural milestone as the Taveta Rice Milling Plant, a flagship project of Taita Taveta Governor Andrew Mwadime, is now ready for commissioning.
Final preparations are currently underway, with technical teams carrying out the last stages of installation and setup ahead of the machinery’s test run before the plant officially begins operations.
To ensure a smooth start, the County Government of Taita Taveta has already begun purchasing paddy rice directly from local farmers. The mill has so far received 36,000 tonnes of paddy rice, marking significant progress toward the quantity required for its official launch.
County officials say the project is expected to transform rice farming in Taveta by providing farmers with a reliable market for their produce, reducing post-harvest losses, and adding value to locally grown rice through modern milling.
In a move aimed at improving farmers’ livelihoods, the county government has also established a streamlined payment system to ensure that farmers receive prompt payment for their deliveries without unnecessary delays.
Once operational, the Taveta Rice Milling Plant is expected to boost agricultural productivity, create employment opportunities, strengthen the local economy, and position Taveta as one of Kenya’s leading rice-producing regions.
