Luhya Elders Endorse Edwin Sifuna for 2027 Presidential Race
The Luhya Elders Forum has endorsed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as its preferred opposition presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election, citing his growing national appeal and leadership credentials.
Speaking during a meeting in Kakamega on Sunday, the elders said Sifuna has demonstrated the ability to unite Kenyans beyond his Western Kenya political base, making him a strong contender for the country’s top seat.
The forum, led by Deputy Chairman Noah Wekesa, said the senator has built a nationwide following through his engagements with citizens across the country and has emerged as one of the opposition’s most promising leaders.
“Our son Edwin Sifuna has been accepted by many Kenyans, and because he is one of our own, we want to state clearly that we support his efforts to join other leaders in shaping the country’s political future,” Wekesa said.
According to the elders, Sifuna toured nearly 17 counties before returning to Western Kenya, where they said he received a warm reception from people of different communities, demonstrating his ability to attract support beyond regional and ethnic boundaries.
The endorsement came during a meeting convened to install a new chairman of the Luhya Elders Forum, following the death of the forum’s former chairman, Patrick Wangamati, in July.
The elders said Kenya needs leaders with a national outlook who can champion unity, good governance and inclusive development, adding that Sifuna has exhibited qualities that position him as a credible candidate ahead of the 2027 polls.
Although the endorsement reflects the position of the Luhya Elders Forum, the race for the opposition’s presidential flag bearer is expected to remain highly competitive as political realignments continue ahead of the next General Election.
