Andrew Mwadime has released scholarship cheques worth KSh 5,328,507 to support 200 Form Three and Form Four students across Taita Taveta County in a move aimed at keeping vulnerable learners in school amid rising economic hardships.

The cheques were officially handed over to secondary school principals during a ceremony held at the governor’s office in Mwatate, where Governor Mwadime reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving access to education for needy families.

Speaking during the event, the governor noted that counties had previously faced challenges in issuing bursaries following a directive that temporarily barred devolved units from managing such educational support programmes. The restriction had affected many students who rely on county assistance to continue with their education.

Governor Mwadime said the latest disbursement reflects his administration’s continued efforts to cushion disadvantaged families and ensure that students do not drop out of school due to lack of school fees.

The KSh 5.3 million scholarship allocation forms part of broader county education support initiatives targeting bright but financially challenged learners within the region. Education stakeholders present during the event welcomed the move, saying it would significantly ease the burden on parents and improve school retention rates.

School principals who received the cheques praised the county government for prioritising education and supporting students during difficult economic times.
