In a statement released on Monday, March 30, Sakaja insisted the issue goes beyond him personally, pointing to an ongoing dispute between the Council of Governors and the Senate of Kenya.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has dismissed the move by police to arrest him over failure to appear before the Senate County Public Accounts Committee, terming it “unwarranted and unnecessary” while maintaining that the matter is institutional in nature and tied to a broader standoff between the Council of Governors and the Senate, which had advised its members not to appear before the committee pending resolution of underlying disputes.
The governor has defended his absence by noting that 29 governors had been summoned on the same day, with most declining to participate in line with the Council’s position, even as police moved to enforce a Ksh 500,000 contempt order issued by the committee, prompting an attempted arrest at City Hall on Monday evening where Sakaja reportedly slipped out as officers arrived, with authorities continuing efforts to secure his appearance before the Senate.
