Omar Abdulkadir Artan is reportedly in Turkey following complications linked to the alleged use of a diplomatic passport, triggering concern among Somali sports and government officials.

According to reports, Turkish immigration authorities questioned the validity and eligibility of the diplomatic passport used by Artan, with officials reportedly clarifying that such passports are reserved for Somalia’s top state officials, including the President, government ministers, and Members of Parliament.

Sources familiar with the matter say Artan has since remained in Turkey and is currently only reachable through a Turkish mobile number, with communication limited to calls and messages from that device.

The incident has sparked discussions within Somali government and sports circles regarding the issuance and use of diplomatic travel documents by individuals outside official state leadership structures.

Meanwhile, the Somalia Football Federation is proceeding with preparations for the upcoming regional football tournament, hosting a send-off dinner for the country’s U17 Women’s National Team ahead of their departure to Tanzania for the CECAFA championship.

Several senior government officials, including cabinet ministers, federation leaders, and other top authorities, are expected to hold an urgent consultative meeting after the dinner to discuss the emerging situation and related administrative concerns.

The matter comes amid increased scrutiny across several African countries over the issuance and misuse of diplomatic passports, with governments tightening regulations surrounding official travel documentation and international representation.
