Harambee Stars CHAN Squad Receive Affordable Housing Units After Government Fulfils Promise
Harambee Stars defender Abud Omar has confirmed that members of the national team squad that participated in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) have officially received their promised affordable housing units from the government.
According to Omar, the players and officials were awarded two-bedroom housing units under a government-supported affordable housing programme following a pledge made in September 2025.
In a statement shared on his social media pages, Omar expressed gratitude to William Ruto and the government for honouring the commitment made to the team.
“On behalf of the entire team, players, and officials who participated in CHAN, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to His Excellency William Ruto and his government for fulfilling the promise made to us,” Omar stated.
The Kenya Police FC defender explained that beneficiaries are required to contribute Ksh1 million towards the houses, while the government covers the remaining balance under the affordable housing arrangement.
“The opportunity to own affordable two-bedroom houses, where we contribute Ksh1 million and the government covers the remaining cost, is a life-changing initiative that will have a lasting impact on our lives and those of our families,” he added.
Speaking as team captain, Omar said the gesture demonstrates the government’s commitment to supporting athletes beyond their football careers and securing their future welfare.
“As captain, I am proud to speak on behalf of my teammates in saying thank you for recognising our efforts and supporting our future beyond football. This gesture demonstrates a genuine commitment to the welfare of Kenyan athletes and sports officials,” he said.
The housing initiative forms part of the government’s broader affordable housing programme, which aims to increase home ownership opportunities for low- and middle-income Kenyans while also recognising national teams and athletes for their contribution to sports development in the country.
