Five Feared Dead in Matatu-Truck Collision Along Eldoret-Nakuru Highway
At least five people are feared dead following a head-on collision involving a 14-seater matatu and a trailer transporting ballast along the Eldoret-Nakuru Highway on Saturday, October 31.
The accident occurred along the busy transport corridor, which has witnessed several road crashes, renewing concerns over the safety of motorists and passengers using the highway.
Meanwhile, Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir has announced a fresh timeline for the opening of the Rironi-Naivasha section of the Ksh200 billion highway project, with the launch now expected in early December 2026.
The revised schedule pushes the completion target beyond the initial October 30 deadline, amid delays affecting the major infrastructure project.
In another development, a long-distance truck driver has highlighted the difficult conditions confronting transport operators in Kenya, citing poor road infrastructure, demanding working schedules and insecurity as some of the major challenges facing the sector.
The concerns also come amid growing attention to the safety of truck drivers operating in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where security challenges continue to pose risks to transport workers.
