Raila Rejects IEBC Results to Challenge Ruto’s Victory at Supreme Court
Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate Raila Odinga has come out to claim that IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati’s declaration of William Ruto as president-elect is null and void.
Speaking on Tuesday, Raila said that Chebukati has no absolute power over other commissioners.
Addressing the press at KICC on Wednesday, August 16, Raila stated that the results announced by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) were erroneous and ought to be nullified.
Raila stated that Azimio will explore all the legal options at its disposal in seeking an annulment of Deputy President William Ruto’s win.
He accused Chebukati of deliberately trying to overturn the will of the people who voted on August 9.
Notably, he argued that their decision to reject the results was substantiated by the four commissioners led by IEBC vice chairperson, Juliana Cherera, who distanced themselves from the results announced by Chebukati.
“Our view in Azimio is clear, the figures by Wafula Chebukati are null and void and must be quashed by a court of law. In our view, there is neither a legally and validly declared winner nor a president-elect.
“The law does not vest in the chairperson, the powers of a dictator to rule IEBC unilaterally. Decisions must be taken by consensus or by a vote of the majority,” Raila stated.
