Kalonzo, Gachagua and Matiang’i Hold Talks as Opposition Eyes 2027 Coalition

Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua and Jubilee Party leader Fred Matiang’i have held talks in a fresh effort to strengthen opposition unity ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The meeting brings together leaders from different opposition camps as they explore ways of establishing a common political platform to challenge President William Ruto’s administration in the next election.
Kalonzo and Gachagua had previously expressed their commitment to supporting a single presidential candidate, with Kalonzo subsequently appointing Matiang’i as chairman of the Ukombozi Alliance Council.
The latest engagement is seen as part of ongoing efforts to bring competing opposition formations together and establish a coordinated strategy ahead of the polls.

The discussions come against a backdrop of disagreements within the opposition over coalition leadership, regional interests and the process of selecting a joint presidential candidate.
Gachagua and Kalonzo have previously committed to supporting a single presidential candidate, although differences have emerged over when the flagbearer should be identified. Kalonzo’s allies have favoured an earlier decision, while Gachagua’s camp has called for further consultations. Daily Nation+2

Matiang’i’s involvement is also significant following his appointment, alongside Siaya Governor James Orengo, as co-chair of the Ukombozi Alliance Council on November 5, 2026. The Star+1
