Boniface Mwangi Sentenced For 2month Prison In Alfred Mutua Defamation Suit
Human rights activist Boniface Mwangi has been sentenced to two months in prison or pay a fine of Ksh 300,000 after the Machakos High Court found him guilty of contempt of court in a defamation suit lodged by Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua.
On Wednesday, November 1, 2023, Justice Rayola Olel slapped Mwangi with a civil jail term after he disobeyed an order requiring him to apologise and retract all defamatory statements on his social media accusing the CS of destroying his house in Lukenya, Athi River, Machakos County.
Appearing before the High Court at Machakos on Wednesday, Mwangi was also given the alternative of paying a Sh300,000 fine.
He had failed to appear in court twice in a defamation case where he was sued by Tourism CS Alfred Mutua who at the time was Machakos Governor.
Mutua filed contempt of court proceedings against Mwangi saying Mwangi had expressly breached and acted in violation of a court order prohibiting him from publishing in the print, and electronic or online media defamatory material or concerning the CS.
