Tinubu under fire for claiming Nigerians are ‘better off than Kenyans’ amid fuel crisis

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu is facing backlash after telling citizens to endure economic hardship, claiming Nigerians are “better off” than those in Kenya and other African countries.

Speaking in Bayelsa on April 10, 2026, Tinubu admitted rising fuel prices were “biting hard” but urged patience, saying his reforms would ease the burden over time.

His remarks have drawn sharp criticism, with many saying they downplay the reality of soaring fuel, transport, and food costs, and questioning comparisons with other countries.

The comments have fueled wider debate over Nigeria’s cost-of-living crisis, as pressure on households continues to grow.

Meanwhile, Kenya Pipeline Company says fuel supplies remain stable nationwide.
“We wish to assure the public that there is sufficient fuel in all of our terminals and depots and that the products meet national and international quality standards as prescribed by relevant certification bodies,” KPC said.
