President William Ruto and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Monday officially launched the expansion and modernization of the United Nations Office at Nairobi, in a landmark project expected to strengthen Nairobi’s position as a global diplomacy and conference hub.

The ambitious project, valued at approximately KSh43.8 billion (USD 340 million), includes the construction of a modern conference facility, new environmentally friendly office blocks, and expanded meeting infrastructure aimed at boosting the UN’s operational footprint in Africa.

During the groundbreaking ceremony held at the UN complex in Gigiri, Nairobi, Guterres described Nairobi as a critical pillar of global multilateralism and reaffirmed Africa’s growing influence within the international community.

“Nairobi is not a satellite or an outpost. It is a pillar — the only United Nations headquarters in Africa and in the Global South,” Guterres said during his address.

The expansion project is the largest investment ever undertaken by the UN Secretariat in Africa in its 80-year history and was approved by the UN General Assembly. Officials said the upgraded facilities will increase conference capacity from 2,000 to 9,000 delegates and add more meeting rooms to accommodate major global summits and diplomatic engagements.

President Ruto welcomed the investment, saying it reflects growing international confidence in Kenya’s strategic role in diplomacy, peacebuilding, environmental leadership, and economic cooperation.

“The modernization and expansion of the United Nations Office at Nairobi is a powerful expression of inclusivity, geographical balance, and the universality of the United Nations system,” Ruto stated.

He further revealed that the Kenyan government is investing heavily in roads, transport systems, hospitality, and digital infrastructure to position Nairobi as a premier global destination for conferences, diplomacy, and international business.

The newly inaugurated office buildings are also designed as climate-resilient and energy-efficient facilities powered by renewable solar energy, aligning with the UN’s sustainability agenda. Officials say the expanded complex is expected to achieve full energy neutrality by 2030.

Separately, Kenya and France also reaffirmed their partnership in advancing Africa’s digital economy, with leaders emphasizing the importance of technology, innovation, and cross-border digital trade in creating employment opportunities for African youth.

The launch ceremony was attended by senior UN officials, diplomats, government representatives, and international development partners, further highlighting Nairobi’s growing significance as a center for global decision-making and multilateral cooperation.
