Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe has etched his name in athletics history after becoming the first man to run a marathon under two hours in an official race, clocking a stunning 1:59:30 at the London Marathon.

Sawe’s remarkable performance shattered the previous world record of 2:00:35 set by the late Kelvin Kiptum in 2023, marking a groundbreaking moment in long-distance running.

The achievement also places Sawe ahead of marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge, who famously ran a sub-two-hour marathon in 2019. However, Kipchoge’s feat was not officially recognized as a world record due to controlled race conditions.

Dominant Race Performance

Sawe signaled his intent early, reaching the halfway mark in 1:00:29—already on world record pace. He then accelerated in the second half, maintaining a relentless rhythm that saw him dip below the historic two-hour mark.

The decisive moment came in the final 10 kilometers, where Sawe surged ahead, leaving most of the field behind. Only Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha managed to keep pace briefly, ultimately finishing second in an impressive 1:59:41—also under two hours.

Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo secured third place with a time of 2:00:28, completing a highly competitive podium.

A Historic Double Sub-Two Finish

In a race that redefined marathon limits, both Sawe and Kejelcha became the first athletes to officially break the two-hour barrier in standard race conditions—an unprecedented milestone in the sport.

Sawe’s victory builds on his strong form after winning the previous edition of the London Marathon in 2:02:27. Pre-race expectations had centered on his attempt to break Kiptum’s course record of 2:01:25, but he far exceeded those projections with a performance for the ages.

A New Era in Marathon Running

This historic run signals a new chapter in marathon racing, long considered one of the most physically demanding disciplines in athletics. Sawe’s achievement not only cements his status among the greats but also raises the bar for future competitors worldwide.

Athletics analysts are already hailing the performance as one of the greatest in sporting history, with the sub-two-hour marathon now officially conquered under competitive race conditions.
