Former KDF Major Peter Mwaura Convicted of Murdering Wife and Two Children
The High Court in Nairobi has found former Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Major Peter Mugure Mwaura guilty of murdering his wife and their two young children in a case that shocked the nation and drew widespread public attention.
In a judgment delivered at the Milimani High Court, Justice Martin Muya ruled that the prosecution had proved beyond reasonable doubt that Mwaura was responsible for the deaths of his 31-year-old wife, Joyce Syombua, their 10-year-old daughter Shanice Maua, and their five-year-old son Prince Michael.
According to the court, the murders occurred in 2019 before Mwaura allegedly transported and buried the victims’ bodies in a shallow grave in Thigithu, Nanyuki, in an apparent attempt to conceal the crime.
Justice Muya said the prosecution presented compelling direct and circumstantial evidence linking the former military officer to the killings. A key witness in the case was Collins Pamba, Mwaura’s colleague, who admitted helping dispose of the bodies after entering into a plea agreement with the prosecution.
The court found that Pamba’s testimony, alongside other evidence presented during the trial, established a clear chain of events leading to Mwaura’s conviction.
The case has remained one of Kenya’s most high-profile murder trials, attracting significant public interest due to the nature of the crime and the accused’s former position in the Kenya Defence Forces.
Sentencing is expected to follow in accordance with the law after the conviction.
