Ruto Announces Major Road Expansion Plan Linking Nairobi to Western Kenya and Lake Victoria Region
President William Ruto has announced plans to expand Kenya’s road network through a major infrastructure programme connecting Nairobi, the Rift Valley, Western Kenya and the Lake Victoria region.
The President said the ongoing Rironi–Mau Summit Road project is expected to be completed by 2027, after which the government intends to extend the road towards Kisii and Malaba in Busia County.
The proposed expansion is aimed at improving connectivity between major towns, easing transportation and facilitating the movement of people and goods across the country.
President William Ruto has outlined plans to extend the Rironi–Mau Summit highway through Kericho, Kisii and Kisumu to Malaba in Busia County, in a major road expansion programme targeting improved connectivity between Nairobi, the Rift Valley and Western Kenya.
Speaking on Sunday, November 8, 2026, during an interdenominational church service at Nyamaiya Stadium in West Mugirango Constituency, Nyamira County, Ruto said the government intends to complete the ongoing Rironi–Mau Summit highway project before embarking on the proposed extension in 2027. The President said the section from Mau Summit would pass through Kericho and Kisii as a dual carriageway before extending towards Kisumu and connecting to the road network leading to Malaba, a key border crossing between Kenya and Uganda.

“We’ve decided that we will extend the Rironi-Mau Summit carriageway to Kericho, Kisii and to Kisumu and to Malaba so that this region can experience economic growth,” Ruto said. Ruto+1
The proposed expansion is expected to strengthen transport links, ease the movement of agricultural produce and commercial goods, reduce travel time and support cross-border trade with neighbouring Uganda.
The announcement comes as the government continues implementing major road infrastructure projects, including the Rironi–Mau Summit highway, which forms part of the Northern Corridor connecting the Port of Mombasa to inland markets and neighbouring countries.
Ruto’s announcement places the proposed Mau Summit–Kericho–Kisii–Kisumu–Malaba connection among the government’s infrastructure priorities for 2027. However, detailed construction timelines and financing arrangements for the proposed extension are yet to be fully outlined. Kenyans+2
Additional development: During the same visit, Ruto announced plans to construct 180 kilometres of roads in Nyamira County, with more than KSh15 billion earmarked for road expansion projects in the county.
