Chief Justice Martha Koome has been awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters degree by Kenya Methodist University (KeMU) in recognition of her contribution to the legal profession, human rights and the administration of justice.

The honour was conferred during the university’s 26th graduation ceremony held in Meru, where Koome received the degree honoris causa, an award given in recognition of distinguished service and contributions rather than completion of an academic programme.

Koome made history in May 2021 when she became Kenya’s first female Chief Justice, taking over leadership of the Judiciary.

During her tenure, the Judiciary has pursued several reforms aimed at improving access to justice, including expanding electronic court filing services, strengthening alternative dispute resolution through mediation, expanding Small Claims Courts and establishing specialised Gender Justice Courts.

The recognition highlights Koome’s contribution to strengthening Kenya’s justice system and improving access to legal services, particularly for vulnerable members of society.

Her honorary doctorate adds to the recognition of her career in law and public service, spanning several decades.
