Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has declared he will not seek re-election on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket in 2027.

Addressing the press on Sunday, May 3, Kang’ata pointed to mounting pressure from both within and outside the party, alongside ongoing but unsuccessful attempts to reconcile internal disagreements, as key factors behind his decision.

He disclosed that he had held a frank conversation with President William Ruto, which, according to him, did not lead to a complete meeting of minds.

“After careful reflection, I wish to state that come 2027, I will not defend my seat on the current party ticket,” Kang’ata stated, affirming his plan to part ways with the President’s party ahead of the next polls.

The governor added that he will unveil the  political outfit he intends to use in the 2027 General Election at a later stage.

At the same time, Kang’ata confirmed he will still vie for a second term as Murang’a governor, dismissing speculation linking him to a presidential or deputy presidential bid.

“I do not intend to become the President of Kenya, nor do I want to become the Deputy President of this country. Mine is only to defend my Murang’a seat,” he added.

Despite the shift, he maintained that he remains committed to UDA for the remainder of his current term and will continue working with the national government.
