The Government has approved KSh6.4 billion to expand and modernise infrastructure at the National Youth Service (NYS) as the Service prepares to accommodate a larger number of recruits.

Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku, who represented President William Ruto during the NYS passing-out parade in Gilgil, Nakuru County, said the funds will support the construction of additional classrooms, workshops, barracks, kitchens and administrative facilities across NYS stations.

According to Ruku, the expanded facilities will have the capacity to accommodate and equip approximately 50,000 NYS personnel at any given time. The investment is part of the Government’s plan to progressively increase NYS recruitment towards 100,000 young people annually by 2028.

Ruku said the recruitment expansion will be accompanied by increased investment in technical and vocational training, with the aim of ensuring recruits graduate with practical skills relevant to labour-market opportunities.

The Government is also expanding staff housing under the Affordable Housing Programme, with projects underway at Gilgil, Mavoloni, the Nairobi Holding Unit and Mombasa, alongside plans for additional developments at other NYS stations.

NYS is also set to receive new equipment to strengthen its operational capacity, including 50 large tipper trucks, two-wheel loaders and 50 excavators.

The announcement comes as the Government seeks to increase the Service’s capacity while linking NYS training more closely to technical skills, employment opportunities and national development programmes.
