Sh55 Donor Moves To Court Seeks Full Account of Linda Mwananchi Funds
A Kenyan voter who contributed Sh55 to the Linda Mwananchi political movement has moved to the High Court seeking a detailed account of funds raised through the initiative associated with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.
Alan Masakhalia wants Sifuna and the Linda Mwananchi Movement to disclose the total amount collected through Paybill number 3033049, the accounts holding the money, expenditure incurred and the people authorised to control the funds.
Masakhalia says he made the Sh55 contribution after responding to public appeals for financial support for the movement, which he understood to be connected to Sifuna’s potential bid for the presidency in the 2027 General Election. He argues that contributors should be informed about how their money is being held and used, particularly if the political project changes direction.
According to figures cited in the case, 9,419 people contributed approximately Sh519,144 on the first day of the fundraising, while the amount reportedly rose to Sh2.21 million within about 36 hours. The Paybill was registered in Sifuna’s official name because Linda Mwananchi had not been registered as a political party at the time.
The petitioner is not asking the court to compel Sifuna to contest the presidency. Instead, he wants the court to determine whether citizens who contributed to the project have legal rights to transparency and accountability over the money they donated.
Masakhalia is also seeking orders to preserve the funds and related financial records and prevent the money from being transferred or used for purposes inconsistent with the representations made during the fundraising.
The case now places the management and accountability of millions of shillings raised through Linda Mwananchi at the centre of a legal dispute ahead of the 2027 elections.
