President William Ruto has received an invitation to attend the upcoming G7 Leaders’ Summit set to take place in Évian, France, in a move that signals Kenya’s rising stature in global economic diplomacy.

The invitation was confirmed following a high-level meeting in Paris between Kenya’s Ambassador to France, Betty Cherwon, and Economic Planning Principal Secretary Boniface Makokha. The discussions focused on Kenya’s preparedness and strategic positioning ahead of the G7 Development Ministers’ Meeting held on April 29–30.

According to the Kenyan embassy, the meeting provided an opportunity to align the country’s priorities and refine its policy agenda to ensure meaningful participation in global development discussions.

“Today’s engagement allowed us to clearly articulate Kenya’s priorities and strengthen our contribution to the G7 development track,” Ambassador Cherwon noted.

Makokha, who is leading Kenya’s delegation in the ministerial talks, emphasized that participation in the G7 process offers the country a valuable platform to influence global policy and build stronger international partnerships.

“Kenya’s invitation to the G7 Leaders’ Summit is a clear recognition of our growing role in shaping international economic discourse,” he said, adding that the country will push for policies that reflect the needs of developing economies, including financing, climate resilience, and inclusive growth.

Kenya is expected to join other invited nations such as Brazil, India, and South Korea, placing it among a select group of emerging economies engaged in high-level dialogue with the world’s leading industrialised nations.

The Évian summit, scheduled for June 15–16, will bring together leaders from the G7 countries to deliberate on key global challenges, including economic recovery, climate action, and sustainable development.

Kenyan officials say the country intends to use the platform to deepen cooperation with international partners and institutions, including ongoing engagements with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Analysts view the invitation as a strong endorsement of Kenya’s economic reforms and diplomatic efforts, as the country continues to position itself as a leading voice for Africa and the Global South in international policy forums.

As preparations intensify, the government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that Kenya’s participation translates into tangible benefits for both the nation and the broader region.
