Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been left out of the Gabon squad to face Ghana with suspected heart issues.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sat out his country’s 1-1 draw with Ghana today, with Gabon claiming he was suffering from minor heart problems after recovering from Covid.
The 32-year-old Gabonese forward was ruled out of the Africa Cup of Nations opener against Comoros due to COVID and he only returned to squad training yesterday, following a negative test.
As reported by BBC Sport, Aubameyang will not be able to play against Ghana after suffering minor heart lesions as a result of his battle with COVID. The Arsenal striker suffered from malaria last year and also suffered from some long-term issues from it.
Aubameyang has been heavily linked with a move to Juventus in recent weeks, with the Bianconeri looking for a replacement for the injured Federico Chiesa, needing a proven goalscorer.
The “cardiac lesions” were found in a check by Confederation of African Football (CAF) medical officials, the Gabonese FA said in a statement. Officials examined Aubameyang after he returned following a positive Covid test. Two of his Gabon teammates, forward Axel Meyé and midfielder Mario Lemina, who were both also found to have the same issue. Aubameyang tested positive at an airport on arrival in Cameroon last week and was put into isolation.
