Taita Taveta Boda Boda Riders Demand Action Over Rising Motorcycle Attacks
Boda boda riders in Taita Taveta County are calling for increased protection amid concerns over motorcycle theft and attacks targeting riders.
The concerns were raised following the recent shooting of a boda boda rider in Mwatate, where the rider was reportedly attacked and his motorcycle stolen near Mwatate Police Station. The incident sparked protests by riders, who called for increased police patrols and stronger action against criminals targeting motorcycle operators.
Governor Andrew Mwadime has urged security and intelligence agencies to speed up investigations, identify those behind the attacks and ensure suspects are brought before the courts.
Mwadime also questioned the role of motorcycle financing and sales agents in recovering stolen motorcycles. He noted that some agents can quickly trace customers who default on loan payments but appear less effective when motorcycles are reported stolen.
The insecurity has been a longstanding concern in the county. In August 2024, Wundanyi MP Danson Mwashako told Parliament that five boda boda riders had been killed in separate incidents over a three-month period, alongside 15 reported motorcycle theft cases that did not result in fatalities.
The latest concerns have renewed calls for stronger security measures to protect boda boda operators, many of whom rely on motorcycles as their main source of livelihood.
