Odinga Brother Criticises Uhuru Over Renewed Claims on 2022 Election
The family of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has criticised former President Uhuru Kenyatta for revisiting the outcome of the 2022 presidential election.
Raila’s younger brother, Omondi Oginga, said Uhuru’s recent remarks have reopened emotional wounds for a family still mourning the former ODM leader. He urged the retired president to stop revisiting the disputed election and allow the family to grieve in peace.
Omondi questioned why Uhuru, who was the sitting President during the 2022 election, did not act at the time if he believed Raila had won the election.
“He was in power, he had all the authority and he didn’t use it well. So there’s no need for him now to respond about the last elections,” Omondi said.
Uhuru reignited the debate on Tuesday during a Jubilee Party meeting in Nairobi, where he said he remained convinced that Raila had won the 2022 presidential election. The IEBC officially declared William Ruto the winner with 7,176,141 votes (50.49%), against Raila’s 6,942,930 votes (48.85%), and the Supreme Court unanimously upheld the result after Raila challenged it.
Omondi has now called on Uhuru to leave Raila out of past political disputes as Kenya heads towards the 2027 General Election, saying the family does not want the former opposition leader’s legacy drawn back into current political contests.
“Raila is now resting, so let him give us a break. We are not happy as a family and as Raila supporters,” Omondi said.
