ICC ENDS PROBE INTO THE 2007 POST ELECTION VIOLENCE
The International Criminal Court (ICC) closed its probe into the 2007 post election violence. The decision saw charges against President William Ruto, Uhuru Kenyatta, and Joshua Sang dropped. They three formed the infamous ‘Ocampo six.’ Alongside Francis Muthaura, Hussein Ali and Henry Kosgey whose cases ended earlier. Their charges included crimes against humanity, including murder and persecution. ICC Deputy Prosecutor Nazhat Shameem Khan confirmed the dismissal of charges.
“I have decided to conclude the investigation phase in the Situation in Kenya… The Office will not pursue additional cases into the alleged criminal responsibility of other persons.”She stated.
The ‘Ocampo six’ allegedly orchestrated violence following the December 2007 elections. Whereby, Mwai Kibaki beat Opposition Leader Raila Odinga. Political unrest ensued causing almost 1300 deaths and loss of property worth millions. Additionally, the clashes displaced over 600,000 people.
The Hague-based court opened investigations into matter in March 2010. Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan recused himself from the case due to conflict of interest. He was part of counsel for President Ruto. 13 years later, Deputy Prosecutor ended the investigations “after considering facts and circumstances.” And, she promptly informed the Kenyan Government of the decision.
“I have informed the relevant authorities of the Republic of Kenya of this decision.”The Deputy Prosecutor said.
