Dongo Kundu Taifa Gas Terminal Nears Completion, as Government Projects Cheaper Cooking Gas for Kenyans
The government has announced that the Taifa Gas LPG Terminal at the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Mombasa is nearing completion, with the project expected to significantly boost the country’s cooking gas supply and reduce the cost of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) for consumers.
Speaking during an inspection of the facility, Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo said construction of the state-of-the-art terminal is in its final stages and will mark a major milestone in Kenya’s efforts to expand access to clean and affordable energy.
The facility comprises 12 spherical LPG storage tanks with a combined storage capacity of 30,000 metric tonnes, making it one of the largest LPG storage terminals in East Africa. Once operational, the terminal will enable the country to import and store larger volumes of cooking gas, helping to stabilise supply and cushion consumers from frequent price fluctuations.
Dr. Omollo noted that increased storage capacity will allow importers to purchase LPG in bulk when global prices are favourable, ultimately translating into lower retail prices for households and businesses across the country.
The terminal is located within the strategically positioned Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone, near the Port of Mombasa and key transport infrastructure, making it easier to distribute LPG efficiently to different parts of Kenya and neighbouring countries.
Beyond lowering cooking gas prices, the project is expected to strengthen Kenya’s energy security by ensuring a steady supply of LPG while reducing dependence on traditional cooking fuels such as charcoal and firewood. The initiative also supports the government’s clean energy agenda aimed at increasing the adoption of environmentally friendly cooking solutions.
The multi-billion-shilling investment is also expected to create employment opportunities, stimulate industrial growth within the Special Economic Zone, and enhance Kenya’s position as a regional energy and logistics hub.
Once commissioned, the Taifa Gas LPG Terminal is expected to play a crucial role in making clean cooking energy more affordable, accessible and reliable for millions of Kenyan households while supporting the country’s long-term economic and environmental goals.
