Real Madrid vs Bayern. Second Goal Explained.

In the first slide, the moment Rudiger (indicated by blue arrow) is receiving the pass, he is NOT offside because of the Bayern defender indicated by red arrow.

By the time the pass is being played to Rudiger, Joselu is offside but he does not interfere with play in any way given the pass is played far away from his direction.

Joselu’s position is thus not considered. Now take a look at the second slide. That’s where Joselu comes in.

By the time Rudiger (who was not offside) is playing the pass, Joselu is NO LONGER offside because he is slightly behind Rudiger if not on the same line with him at least.

At this point, the law states if the receiver is closer to the opponent’s goal line than the ball (or passer) when it’s being played to him, then there will be offside.

In this case the receiver (Joselu) is not ahead of the ball or passer (Rudiger), so there is NO OFFSIDE offence.
