President Uhuru Kenyatta is on Friday launched a modern shipyard at the Kenya Naval Base, Mombasa.

In May this year, President Kenyatta launched the Kenya Shipyard Limited, a state corporation under the Ministry of Defence. The project was built by the Kenya Navy and completed about two months ago, is poised to be one of the largest shipyards in East Africa.

President Uhuru Kenyatta commissioned the Kenya Shipyards Limited (KSL) Mombasa Shipyard at Mtongwe, a 4000-ton slipway for shipbuilding activities including refitting of vessels operated by Kenya Navy, Govt agencies and private operators.

KSL will be the main hub for ship construction for not only the Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies but also for the entire East African region.

To maximise economic benefits of the Mombasa Shipyard, Uhuru urged coastal counties to draw up strategies for strengthening commercial maritime activities such as fishing, tourism and transport.

“By so doing, it will be possible to unlock the enormous business potential that abounds within Kenya’s territorial waters and the coastal strip,” he said.

President Uhuru Kenyatta was accompanied by Hon Raila Odinga, Defense CS Wamalwa, Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and other elected leaders
