The High Court has declined to release police officer Klinzy Baraza on bail in a closely watched murder case arising from the fatal shooting of a street vendor in Nairobi’s central business district, citing security concerns and the risk of interference with witnesses.

In a ruling delivered on Monday, the court said the circumstances surrounding the killing of Boniface Kariuki were “exceptional” and had attracted intense public attention, elevating the potential risk to the victim’s family and the integrity of the trial.

“The court takes judicial notice that this matter has generated widespread public interest and discourse,” the judge said, adding that the deceased’s family had been exposed to intimidation since the incident became public.

According to court records, Kariuki’s relatives have received “numerous unsolicited phone calls and messages,” which the court said raised serious concerns about their safety and well-being if the accused were released.

Baraza is accused of shooting Kariuki on June 17, 2025, along a busy street outside Imenti House in Nairobi’s CBD. Kariuki, a mask vendor, was reportedly conducting his usual business when he was shot in the head during an encounter with police. He was rushed to the hospital but later died while undergoing treatment.
