The government plans to revive the 130km Voi-Taveta railway line.
Kenya Railways’ Managing Director, Philip Mainga, leading a team of experts in a courtesy call visit to Taita Taveta County Governor visited governor Andrew Mwadime β Wakujaa at the county headquarters Mwatate, where they discussed on plans to fulfill President William Ruto’s promise to the people of Taita Taveta and the broader Coast region.
According to Mr. Mainga, the six-month project will significantly improve the transportation of goods, including raw materials, both within the county and beyond.

During his recent tour of Taita Taveta, President William Ruto reaffirmed his commitment to reviving the old railway line, in response to a request from Governor Mwadime.
Tobias Otieno, the General Manager of Engineering and Technical Services at Kenya Railways Cooperation explained that the corporation also plans to construct a transshipment facility in Voi, designed to facilitate the seamless movement of goods between the Meter Gauge Railway (MGR) and Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) lines.

H.E Dr. Andrew Mwadime – Wakujaa, EGH, Governor Taita Taveta County expressed strong support for the project, emphasizing that the reinstatement of the railway line would be a game-changer for the county’s economy.
The team also visited Maktau, Bura and Taveta to ascertain the status of the railway line.
Present during the meeting were County Executive Members, including Christina Zighe (Lands, Physical Planning, and Mining), CPA Arch. Martin Tairo Maseghe (Public Works and Infrastructure) among other officials.
