Cape Verde Edge Ethiopia 1-0 In Afcon Opener on Sunday Night at Stade Omnisport Paul Biya
Cape Verde got their Africa Cup of Nations campaign off to a positive start after edging ten-man Ethiopia on Sunday night at Stade Omnisport Paul Biya
Cape Verde secure their second-ever win at an AFCON tournament and their first since 2013 vs. Angola after Julio Tavares secured a win for Cape Verde at 45 + 1″
Ethiopia endured an unwanted start ten minutes in when the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) changed Yared Belay’s yellow card to red for a foul on Julio Tavares, who was deemed to be through on goal. Ethiopia coach was forced to re-shuffle his pack as Mohammed Mesud unfortunately made way for Mignot Dada, who slotted into the centre of the defence.

What a remarkable win for the Blue Sharks. They've just sealed their very first #TotalEnergiesAFCON victory since 2013! ✅#TotalEnergiesAFCON2021 | #AFCON2021 pic.twitter.com/SahEtXDx06
As expected, a substitution from Ethiopia followed soon after with Mignot Dada introduced and Mohammed Mesud sacrificed in the process.
Despite being a man down,, Ethiopia kept the balance of play intact towards full-time, but the Blue Sharks still enjoyed the better chances and with that held on to a narrow victory.
WHAT IT MEANS! 🇨🇻🦈
