TTC County Collaborates with ActionAid and Anti-FGM Board to prepare for Girl Child Day that will take place at Taveta Sub-county on Tuesday, 11th October.
The County Government of Taita Taveta is collaborating with ActionAid and the Anti-FGM Board to prepare for the Day of the Girl Child that will take place at Taveta Sub-county on Tuesday, 11th October.
This year’s theme is: Our time is now, our rights, our future.
The County Government and ActionAid have thereby conducted build-up activities in Voi where a 3-day sensitization forum was held to plan for 2023 to fill gaps and create interventions for women’s and girls’ rights.
Director Youths, Sports, Culture, Gender and Social Services Wallace Mwaluma noted that so far the strategic partnership has helped in empowering girls by taking them to Vocational Training Centres VTCs.
“ This targets girls who have dropped out of school whereby taking them to a resource centre gives them skills for economic empowerment. They learn courses like dressmaking and masonry, “ Mr Mwaluma stated.
Adnoice Mwandisha, 27,a beneficiary, believes she is now empowered as she was taken to Kishushe VTC to learn masonry.
ActionAid Project Manager Pauline Atieno noted that they have visited school girls through the Girls Forum Club, thus teaching them about rights, the importance of completing education and avoiding traps of early pregnancies.
Atieno and Mwaluma noted that their offices worked together to influence policies affecting women and girls.
The Sexual Gender-Based Violence SGBV and Child Welfare and Protection policies have been passed as a result, and the Anti-FGM and Gender Mainstreaming policies are yet to be passed.
Another collaborative initiative through the ongoing WEE project under the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation conducts capacity building for duty bearers and Civil Society Organisations CSOs.
