Oburu Odinga Crowned as Luo Community Leader

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader, Oburu Odinga, has been crowned as the official leader of the Luo community.

Oburu was coronated during the 5th Luo Piny Festival held in Migori on December 17, 2025, in the presence of President William Ruto.

The elder brother of Raila Odinga follows in the footsteps of the late former prime minister, taking over the post held by his brother until his demise in October.

The new Luo community leader has promised to serve with integrity, unity, and purpose.

“I accept this responsibility with humility and a deep commitment to serve with integrity, unity, and purpose,” Oburu wrote on his social media account.

During the coronation, Oburu was crowned with the traditional Luo feather crown that signified leadership.

Oburu was also givenĀ a spear and shield to symbolise his role as the defender of the Luo community.

The ODM leader was also given a whisk which symbolises the call for peace when whisked.

As the new Luo Community leader, Oburu Odinga performed the ceremonious spear dance as he chanted Jowi.

The crowning ceremony was led by the Luo spiritual leader, Ker, who is the custodian of the Luo culture.
