Members of Parliament on Thursday voted in favour of the Finance Bill 2024, paving the way for its second reading.

The legislators voted by roll call amid widespread protests against the proposed tax measures.

The contentious bill sailed through after 204 endorsed it against 115 who voted no. There were no abstentions.

The Bill now moves to the committee of the whole House where members will have a chance to push through their amendments.

The Committee will consider the Bill clause by clause and take a vote on each of the clauses before a report is sent to the House seeking approval.

If it is approved, it moves to the final stage which is the Third reading. Here, no amendments are made and a final vote is taken.

If the MPs approve the Bill, the Speaker of the National Assembly transmits it to the President for assent. The President has 14 days, to assent to it or refer it back to the House with some reservations.
