Eric Omondi Jailed For 1 Month Over Protest
Comedian Eric Omondi was on Friday sentenced to one month imprisonment or an alternative of a Ksh 10,000 fine after pleading guilty to taking part in unlawful assembly.
The comedian alongside 15 others, was sentenced for creating disturbance outside Parliament buildings where they demonstrated over the high cost of living.
Milimani Chief Magistrate Lukas Onyina while delivering his ruling, gave the accused persons a period of 14 days to appeal the decision.
“I have considered the mitigation made and the nature of the offence which is a misdemeanour and the fact that the prosecution has said that they are first-time offenders,” the Magistrate ruled.
The 16 were convicted on grounds of staging the protest without informing the police as required by the law.
The defense lawyers had asked asked for leniency from the court before sentencing as their clients had already pleaded guilty to the charges.
Activist and entertainer Eric Omondi has revealed that he was hellbent on going to prison instead of settling the alternative fine imposed on him arguing that he would benefit from the free food and other essential benefits offered in prison.
