100 bright students benefit from County Secondary school scholarship.
One hundred academically gifted but less fortunate students across the County have received a comprehensive financial support worth Sh 15m from the County Government to enable them pursue secondary school education for the next four years.
The support includes school fees for continuing students in the programme and uniforms and stationery for those joining form one.
While awarding the scholarships at the County headquarters in Mwatate, H.E Governor Andrew Mwadime said the beneficiaries were selected on basis of vulnerability.
“The beneficiaries of this programme went through a rigorous vetting exercise to ensure the most needy are awarded. We have looked at marginalised groups, orphans, those brought up by single parents and parents with disabilities,” said the Governor.
Governor Mwadime reiterated his commitment to uplift the county’s education standards through various initiatives and partnerships.
“If you mess with these four years in secondary school, you will mess your future. Go and work hard for a bright future,” he cautioned the students.
Deputy Governor Christine Kilalo challenged the beneficiaries to shun negative vices which may interfere with their studies.
Health CECM Gifton Mkaya speaking on behalf of Education, Libraries and VTCs CECM Gloria Monikombo said the scholarships are key in providing a level playing field for bright students from underprivileged families.
Deputy speaker Anselm Mwadime warned the students who will post dismal performance that they risk losing the sponsorship.
“This is your golden opportunity to excel in academics. If you post poor results you risk losing the sponsorship to another deserving hardworking student,” he warned.
Enock Mwanzia from a less fortunate family in Eldoro Village, Taveta Sub-County who scored 361 marks in the 2022 KCPE examinations was all smiles as he received his scholarship from Governor Wakujaa.
“I come from a poor family. Based on our circumstances, the only hope I had was to perform well in the exams and hopefully win a scholarship to join secondary school. My mother is mentally challenged and we have been helping her together with my brother’s,” said Mwanzia who is headed to his dream school, Dr Aggrey High school.
County Education Fund Board Chair David Mombo challenged the beneficiaries to work hard in order to attain university entry points after completing their secondary education.
Fund Board Ag CEO Lawrence Mwakio appealed to school heads to retain the sponsored students especially when there is delayed funding from the exchequer.
Apart from the school fees, the students have also benefited from uniforms and stationery.
