The process of looking for Kenya’s next set of representatives to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) started in earnest Wednesday morning.

This followed the first meeting of the joint committee on the selection of members to the EALA.

The Election of Members to the East African Legislative Assembly is guided by the Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community and the East African Legislative Assembly Elections Act, 2011.

Articles 50 and 51 of the Treaty provide for the election of members of the assembly and the tenure of elected members respectively.

Members hold office for five years and are eligible for re-election for a further term of five years.

The election should be held within ninety (90) days before the expiry of the date of the outgoing Assembly.
