A formal request has been issued to the United States Speaker of the House of Representatives and Republican member of Congress Mike Johnson, urging President William Samoei Ruto to address a joint session of Congress.

Michael McCaul, Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, filed the request in a joint letter with Gregory Meeks, a Ranking Member of the Committee.

If Johnson agrees to the request, it would be the first time in 18 years an African president has addressed the Congress.

Liberia’s former president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf did so eighteen years ago and used the occasion to tell of her country’s rise from the ashes of a deadly civil war.

Mc Caul and Meeks highlighted Kenya’s efforts in the maintenance of regional peace and stability, specifically its leadership of the anti-terrorism campaign as key areas of interest
